If anyone reading this has a theory about what may have caused the problem in the first place, IвЂ™d be very interested to read it. The external hard drive was inaccessible from both the laptops.

Maybe, but I tried to access the external hard drive from both my Windows 10 laptops and they both brought up the same error message. Was the problem actually caused by my computer? Why my WD My Passport Ultra suddenly stopped allowing me access remains a mystery. IвЂ™m sure the way I went about it was incredibly convoluted and someone more knowledgeable could provide a more direct and logical process/pathway for solving the problem.

They are merely my best recollection of what I did and the fact that I ended up regaining access to my external hard drive. The above notes are not meant as instructions. I think I checked/ticked them all and lo and behold, my external drive was now accessible. I typed in вЂњEveryoneвЂќ and then вЂ“ if I recall correctly вЂ“ I think I then clicked the adjacent button titled вЂњCheck NamesвЂќДЄt around this point somewhere вЂ¦ I donвЂ™t remember exactly & donвЂ™t want to tamper with it for now вЂ¦ the new user or group titled вЂњEveryoneвЂќ was accepted and a list of permissions was presented. This panel has an area at the bottom titled вЂњEnter the object names to select (examples)вЂќ. This brought up a panel called Select Users or Groups. Under the window called вЂњGroup or user names:вЂќ I clicked the button titled вЂњAddвЂќ. This popped up another panel called вЂњSecurityвЂќ The point to note is that there is a button under this panel titled вЂњEditвЂќ. I donвЂ™t think it actually matters which one is clicked. One was вЂњSYSTEMвЂќ вЂ¦ The other was вЂњAdministrators (followed by other letters)вЂќД¬licking on either of these displays the вЂњpermissionsвЂќ that each has. The top panel under this tab is called вЂњGroup or user namesвЂќ. I clicked on вЂњMy Passport (K:)вЂќ and then clicked the button titled вЂњPropertiesвЂќ then clicked the tab titled вЂњSecurityвЂќ. ItвЂ™s possible in my case that this was unnecessary, but I donвЂ™t know for sure. Suggested that this can sometimes fix the kind of error message IвЂ™d been getting. Note: I had earlier renamed my external hard drive from вЂњDвЂќ to вЂњKвЂќ because some articles IвЂ™d read In the window at the bottom, called вЂњVolumeвЂќ (which provided other details) I clicked on вЂњMy Passport (K:)вЂќ Now вЂњVolumesвЂќ became visible and various data about the drive became visible.

Right-clicked on the the listing вЂ¦ selected вЂњPropertiesвЂќ вЂ¦ then selected the tab вЂњVolumeвЂќ. Note In these steps, drive D refers to the (wrong) drive letter assigned to a volume, and drive C refers to the (new) drive letter you want to change to, or to assign to the volume. I went to my Device Manager and saw that WD My Passport 259D USB Device was indeed listed. To change or swap drive letters on volumes that can't otherwise be changed using the Disk Management snap-in, use the following steps.
